VJ Associates among those cited in coveted Municipal Arts Society awards for New York projects

April 19, 2019

(New York, New York) - In recognition of their expertise, insight and professional competence, VJ Associates will be among those cited by the Municipal Arts Society (MAS) when the Society awards the New York City Economic Development Corporation with their “Best Urban Landscape Project for 2019,” for the Hunter’s Point South, Phase 2, waterfront park and residential complex and MAS’ “Best New Building” Award to Columbia University for The Forum, the university’s new gateway building on their Manhattanville campus.

Selected each year by an esteemed jury, the MASterworks Awards pay tribute to projects that make a significant contribution to New York City’s built environment. Past winners include the Fulton Center, McCarren Pool, Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse, the High Bridge, and the Museum at Eldridge Street.

Mr. Vijay Desai, Founder and President of VJ Associates stated, “We are proud of the role we played in estimating costs for these two significant projects. Hunter’s Point represents an additional strengthening of the city’s quality of life and an important reinvention of this vital acreage from industrial to recreational and residential and The Forum is an extraordinary structure that allows for the imaginative use of construction materials.”

Two profoundly different designs that depended on VJ Associates estimating

Hunter’s Point South Park features bicycle pathways, fitness equipment for adults, a playground, picnic terraces, seating areas, a kayak launch, and a 30-foot-high cantilevered observation platform that provides scenic views of Manhattan. The $100-million park project also created 3,400 linear feet of new roadways, storm sewers, sanitary sewers, water main and utilities, all of which will support the 1,120-unit housing complex that is being developed in the second phase of the project whose landscape design earned the MASterworks Award.

The Forum is a multipurpose venue on a triangular piece of property at the corner of 125th Street and Broadway in Manhattan. It will host academic conferences, meetings and seminars, providing an exciting educational space on three levels and a below-grade space. Mixing mediums, the auditorium, whose function requires opaqueness, utilizes prefabricated concrete skin; the offices, which require daylight, offer a glazed façade; while the public is welcomed on the ground floor with a transparent design.

Mr. Chongba Sherpa, CCM, LEEP AP, Director of Projects for VJ Associates, explained, “The Forum is one of the most unique and challengingly designs I have worked on in some time. The custom concrete facades required special attention in determining costs, and construction was also impacted by the unique shape of the property and its proximity to street and pedestrian traffic.  It was an honor to work with the design and construction team through every milestone to ensure that cost projections and budget were aligned and there were no surprises.”

VJ Associates provides the construction industry with a broad range of cost estimating services from pre-design through bid document stages. Given its expertise and reputation for excellence, the company continues to play an integral role in estimating costs for key infrastructure projects throughout the northeast working on behalf of public agencies and private companies.
