Willets Point Sustainable Water Management
VJ Associates was selected by eDesign Dynamics to provide cost estimating services, including a Life Cycle Cost Analysis, for a 60-acre development site comparing different options for storm water management and the sanitary sewer system. This estimate included a DEP sewage pump station and a membrane bioreactor filtration system to handle a 1 million-gallon-per-day capacity. The analysis was used to calculate, in today's dollars, the total costs incurred in 50 and 100 years.
The goal of the Life Cycle Cost Analysis for this project was to adopt the most cost efficient solution over the long term, while effectively reducing sanitary waste, filtering storm water, and establishing methods for reusing waste water. This analysis provided planners with the tools to establish a budget based on future financial outcomes.
Willets Point Redevelopment, located in Flushing, NY, is a sustainable site plan to include approximately 5,500 housing units, 500,000 sq ft of office space, 1.7 million sq ft of retail space, a school, a hotel, a convention center, and 8 acres of open public spaces. This vision includes graywater recycling, on-site storage, and waste treatment facilities.
